House Information

The above picture is not of the house to be rented but only an example to show the reader the white-walled, thatched roof style of peasant houses in Hungary. Pictures of the house to be rented are coming soon. For a plan of the house, click here.

Many houses throughout the countryside of Hungary purport to be “old peasant houses” as the name has held a unique attraction to foreigners visiting Hungary. This practice has become so prevalent that virtually any home that shows signs of distress through age (cracks in the wall, for instance) has been described as an “old peasant house”. I, myself, have learned this through personal experience while searching for a vacation property to buy in Veszprém County widely regarded as the most coveted region of Lake Balaton for its beauty, tranquility and culture.

The widespread use of the term, “old peasant house” is understandable considering the rustic charm that these buildings inherently possess. The house to be rented is typical in design and function of this style. 100 years old, the house is long and narrow, perhaps 20 or 30 feet wide and 100 feet long being rectangular in shape. There is one level to the house, with a small triangular attic above. From the outside it matches the look as seen on the above picture.

The Interior

The inside of the house is fully renovated and furnished with some modern amenities, water (a bathroom with toilet, sink and shower as well as a kitchen sink) and electricity. There is no gas or telephone in the house. We decided, when purchasing the house to retain the integrity of the “old world” feel of the house by keeping the large wood stove in the kitchen which  can be used for cooking or for heating the entire house. If a telephone or connectivity to the internet is required by our guests, both can be found in the village.

The house is divided along its length into five separate rooms. The first, a living room has lots of natural sunlight and a Hungarian “búboskemence” or “cone-shaped stove” which is used to heat the house during winter. The next room where one enters the house via a small porch is the kitchen and an adjacent bathroom. Beyond that one finds both bedrooms. The furthest bedroom has its own entrance to the outside. Lastly, there is a food storage and summer kitchen at the other end of the house.

The Garden

The Garden is at either end of the house and runs along one side of the house. At one end of the house, next to the summer kitchen, there is space to park a car and a cellar in a separate building. The other end of the house adjacent to the living room is a pleasant spot to relax and enjoy the sun.

The house is available for rent from July onwards. In August, only short term rentals will be considered. Please contact us for prices and availability.
